My Home Theater

One of the things I was looking for when my wife and I decided to buy a new house was a "dedicated" home theater/media room, one that was big enough and dark enough. I converted a room in the basement of our new house that fortunately had no windows, so even on summer nights in Alabama (when the sun is still bright at 7:00) you can enjoy a movie in theater-like surroundings.

You're looking at the room from the back left, and you can see the right corner/right wall. The room can accomodate five to seven people comfortably, both on the furniture and on bean bags in the floor (don't laugh... they're comfortable and kids love them, as do some adults!). I tried to get the walls as dark as possible, but still use an attractive color.

Speakers are mounted in each corner, with the center speaker (of course) being on top of the television. Fortunately there's a drop ceiling, so running wires through the ceiling was no problem. Front speakers sit on custom corner shelves (they were a little too heavy for standard speaker mounts) and you can sorta see one behind the tree on the right. Rears are mounted slightly behind the seating area on standard speaker mounts, the kind you can buy at any Best Buy. They worked perfectly. The subwoofer is to the right of the TV.

There is no natural light in the room at all, so there are several uplights around the floor controlled by a fader, as well as one small lamp. The overheads are flourescent and are almost never on (but are for the picture so you can see the room!).

There's a closet to the left on the left wall (not pictured) where I store my nearly 400 DVDs and 50 or so laserdiscs. (You can check out my software library here: DVDs | LDs)

One day I'd like to have a refreshment stand in the back of the room, but for now our refreshment needs are handled by a small refrigerator and microwave next to the couch on the right wall (you can't see them in the picture, but you can see the popcorn boxes on top of them).

You can have a look at my equipment list here.

I also have one corner of the room (behind the seating area, in the back) dedicated to a smallish "studio." I really wanted to have access to all my keyboards and recording equipment. You can have a look at my keyboard equipment list here.

In the back are two studio reference monitors from the TRUTH series by Behringer, along with a small Behringer mixer and a Mac PowerBook G3 running ProTools.
