I've recently joined a start-up company called Red Barn Publishing as Creative Director. We are in the process of launching online flipbooks of our magazines, which I will link to from here, but in the meantime here are some galleries from some recent photo shoots.

Jonathan Carney
The concertmaster (1st chair violinist) of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra loves his farm, and his 1687 Stradivarius. We got a chance to photograph both. I can't wait to post our conversation, maybe as a podcast; Jonathan is a fascinating guy. The story will run in one of our magazines in Spring 2010. | See the gallery

Thomas Jefferson Garden
The garden at Monticello is Mecca for vegetable enthusiasts. We went in before the park opened to grab some quick shots for a story on Jefferson's influence on home gardens. | See the gallery

David Wolfskill
David is one of the most skilled corn farmers in the country, and family plays a huge role in his success. His award-winning yields will be featured in an upcoming issue of a Red Barn custom publication. | See the gallery

One of my primary responsibilites at The Progressive Farmer was running one of our premier editorial programs, The Best Places To Live In Rural America. I worked with editors at CNN/Money to develop the statistical structure of the program; coordinated editors and photographers (we used only staff photography and traveled to each place ourselves); top-edited copy; designed the section for the magazine; and shot, wrote and produced several pieces for the project as a traveling writer and photographer myself.

Country Place samples -Article/Section Designer -Editor/Producer -Photographer
As a Senior Editor I also wrote and designed covers and was responsible for editing the Country Place section of the magazine, along with all home and garden well features. These sections represent the design principles outlined in my visual style guide (see "editorial design" below). I planned and produced all copy for these sections; planned, directed and shot photography and illustrations; and designed the pages.

Over The Fence -Section/Cover Designer -Writer -Editor
Another responsibility at PF was editing the opening section of the magazine, then called "Over The Fence." The pages featured news, notes and audience interaction. Since I was so involved with writing covers and story planning overall, I was often able to tie in the cover, opening page and well feature (as in Sample 1). The section as a whole won several design and writing awards during its 6-year run.

A redesign was crucial to PF's repositioning as a lifestyle magazine. The Executive Editor, Art Director and I worked closely with consultants to craft the design. My job was to implement it by creating InDesign templates, authoring a visual style guide, and presenting it to the staff. The redesigned magazine won Best Overall Magazine Design three straight years from AAEA.

Visual Style Guide -Author/Designer
Every member of the staff got a copy of this guide, which helped us stay on the same page with the visual details that yielded a consistent, coherent look for the redesign.

The book was also restructured to improve reader navigation and make the most of our editorial core competencies. I presented this PowerPoint to the staff (represented here as a JPG gallery) as we launched the design.

s t a n f o r d     p r o j e c t
One of my favorite projects was a team exercise at the Stanford Professional Publishing School. I was the editorial team leader; we developed the concept for a new magazine around the general subject given us by the faculty--activism--and had only four days to develop it and then present it to the school in competition with other teams. Our team won the competition. I created all of the branding material, the PowerPoint for the presentation to the school (which I also delivered) and all the pages and covers for the magazine. Below are some of these materials.
